The Cost of Making a Hit Song? $1,078,000

Earlier this year, NPR calculated the cost of making a hit record. They did this by polling a group industry executives using Rihanna’s “Man Down” as an example. The results were staggering – from the perspective of most indie musicians, anyway.

Interestingly, a majority of the cost went to “roll out” (marketing) expenses, suggesting that (as Digital Music News postulates) “getting mainstream radio rotation is virtually impossible these days without major label backing.” All of which makes Headliner seem like a pretty good deal, if we do say so ourselves.
