Beyonce’s Lemonade: Marketing Genius

It is no secret that Beyonce’s marketing campaigns are flawless. What does it take to make an album, create a film/musical/series of music videos for it, release it on HBO, have the whole world watch it for free, solely release your album on Tidal, start your tour within the same week of the drop, AND be a human being? A great team with the ability to plan and execute flawlessly, no pun.

Lemonade, the visual album, had no release date when the single “Formation” was surprisingly released on February 6, 2016. Prior to that, Beyonce had not released an album since December of 2014. While remaining silent about her endeavors for this new album, she released a single right before her second Super Bowl halftime performance and made sure that the visual addressed the controversial racial injustices of America.

Further building her buzz, she had all of her dancers dress like Black Panthers for the Super Bowl halftime event. This threw the world in a frenzy and even had people come out to protest against her. Once the halftime performance was over, she announced the “Formation World Tour” to an average of 111.9 million TV viewers (the third largest audience in TV history). Within the first two weeks of sales, Formation sold out two New York shows, two London show, and added a second Chicago night. This was all without any indication of an album being released.

Less than two months later she announces an activewear brand called Ivy Park, along with its’ partnership with TopShop (an established UK clothing line/brand). The release entailed a visual story explaining her training at this park when she was younger and a series of photos with her in her line. STILL NO ALBUM RELEASE DATE!

As soon as she had everyone at the edge of their seat wondering what all of this could be leading up to, her marketing team along with HBO released a 5-7 second clip of “Lemonade”. There was no indication as to what it could’ve been. A short film? A music video? A documentary? The album everyone was waiting for? The release was announced and set for April 23rd, leaving a week for suspense and anticipation. As the date grew closer a longer promotional clip was released, and it still kept much of what it was a secret. It was definitely a friendly reminder that the date for release was approaching.

HBO created a perfect marriage between Beyonce’s “Lemonade” event and promotion their HBO Now service by offering all viewers a free weekend of HBO. Not only did this allow any and everyone to watch the “Lemonade” event, it also gave people access to HBO from Friday-Sunday for the series premieres of shows like “Game of Thrones” & “Silicon Valley”.

TV by the Numbers reports that Beyoncé’s film pulled in 787,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic.” – Spin Magazine

Not bad for Queen B! Lemonade, the visual concept album, was a 58 minute long film that went through the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of her relationship with infamous rapper and mogul Jay-Z. Being that Beyonce and Jay-Z had been incredibly private about their relationship (aside from the 2014 elevator incident that went public without their consent), it was a shock for most to see and hear about her struggles with him. As if that wasn’t marketable enough, she made certain to focus on the beauty of black culture and her heritage. The visual album celebrated black women throughout her entire short film, and shed light on the pains of black women who have lost their sons due to police brutality and racial injustice. Showcasing many sides of the artist herself, it was undoubtedly the most innovative piece of work that Beyonce has put together. Directly after the release of the visual album, the album was available via Tidal and Tidal only.

Within hours of the album’s release, Tidal, the only place you can listen to “Lemonade” for now, shot towards the top of Apple’s App Store rankings. It was number 12 as of Sunday morning, even though it wasn’t even listed in the top apps list before “Lemonade” dropped. It reached as high as number 3 by Sunday afternoon.” – Tech Insider

If that wasn’t enough, Lemonade went on to break the internet. With a record of 4.1 million tweets in under 48 hours, Entertainment Weekly states that Lemonade’s twitter mentions “soared from 1.8 thousand tweets per minute to 9.2 thousand from roughly 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The uproar has declined in recent days, but holds steady at 450 tweets per minute nearly 48 hours later.

It has been less than a week since the release of Lemonade on Saturday, and she has already kicked off her “Formation” tour on the 27th. Needless to say…the entire marketing layout for her release was a huge success. Setting Beyonce apart from any other artist of her time, she has continuously found new ways to reset the bar and innovate the release of music in the digital age. One thing is for certain, with a marketing team like hers and the ability to somehow keep all of her maneuvers under wraps…she will continue to change the music world.

The 5 Best Snapchat Updates To Use

The Snapchat 2.0 update is live and direct! Although there are constant Snapchat updates (more specifically with their lenses), Snapchat 2.0 has added many features to help broaden the dynamics of the app itself. We at CoPromote have made a list below of our five favorite updates!

1) Lenses: Old and New

The first step to these lenses, is knowing how to access them.

  1. Place the camera on selfie-mode.
  2. Tap on your face and hold until a white outline of your face appears, then release.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, a list of lenses will appear and as you scroll left at the bottom more lenses should appear.
  4. Once you press on one…magic happens.

The same Snapchat lenses used to be available on a day-to-day basis. Then Snapchat introduced the idea of selling the lenses to users. NOW, we get a new lens every day! Don’t worry, if you bought a lens it will always be available to you.

2) Video & Audio Notes

Video notes now let you record 10 seconds of video that loop when your friend watches your message!

Audio notes let you record audio to respond to Snapchatters when you don’t necessarily feel like typing or sending video notes. As a bonus, there are also 100 reaction stickers unique to Snapchat!

3) Video Chats/Voice calls

Watch out WhatsApp! Snapchat has arrived. You are now able to make a phone call (voice call) or video call (video chat) to people within your Snapchat network. If a friend video calls you, you have the option to either watch or join. While watching the other person, they cannot see or hear you but you can send them text responses.

The same applies to voice calls. You have the option to either listen to or join in on the conversation, while always having text responses available to you.

Open a conversation with a friend on Snapchat (or begin one), and once you tap on the message box you will see five icons appear. The second icon is the “Voice Call” button, and the fourth icon is the “Video Chat” button. Try it out and see how it works for you!

4) Sending multiple photos in Chat 2.0 at once

There is no longer a single photo limit to the amount of pictures you can send! When sending a snap, click on the photo icon on the far left. You may select up to 10 photos to send. There’s no limit to a snap.

5) Sending photos during video and audio calls

We had to test this option out as soon as we read about it because, for some reason, we didn’t believe it. Lo and behold, it worked! If you are connected to a WiFi network and you’re on a phone call, you can go straight to your Snapchat and snap away. You won’t even have to put your friend on hold while you snap.

There you have it. CoPromote’s five favorite Snapchat updates. Follow us on Snapchat for our latest snaps and stories!

3 Instagram Updates You Should Be Aware Of-2

3 Instagram Updates You Should Know About

Instagram launched on October 6th, 2010 and has accumulated over 400 million users in the past 5 1/2 years. The success is legendary – within its first two months of being active, it had 1 million active users. Since its launch, however, Instagram has undergone several changes and updates.

Below, we’ve listed three new updates that Instagram has announced or made live within the last two months you should know about.

New Algorithm

The social web was in a frenzy when everyone found out Instagram’s algorithm would alter the way posts show up on your timeline. Instead of showing you posts in a timed chronological order, Instagram will begin to show the most popular posts at the top of each feed. Don’t fret, it will not be implemented for months and they are asking for feedback on why they should or shouldn’t go live with this update. If you oppose it, voice your opinion. If you don’t, you just might see the change you’re looking forward to.

This announcement resulted in people making infographics pointing to the top righthand corner of each post (towards the settings button) stating “Turn on Notifications”, “Turn Me On”, and more. Turning on notifications for specific people will alert your phone every time they post a photo/video on instagram. Turn them on at your own risk.

15 Seconds to 60 Seconds

Instagram has announced that they will be extending the length of a video post from 15-second clips to clips that are one minute long. They stated that video views have increased by 40 percent in the last 6 months in their blog post.

They have already begun rolling out this update. Along with extending the length of video time, they will allow iOS users to clip video footage together through your camera roll. Get ready for more camera time, and getting to know those you follow a bit more intimately :)

Account Switching

In early February, Instagram announced that account switching was available as part of Instagram version 7.15 for iOS and Android. I want to thank Instagram personally for making this option available.

This makes managing several accounts much easier, being available with just one tap instead of having to continuously sign out and sign back in! This is definitely one feature that will be used frequently.

To make this feature available: “Go to your profile settings to add an additional account. From there, tap your username at the top of your profile to switch between accounts. Once you have multiple accounts added, you’ll see your profile photo appear in places throughout the app so you can always tell which one you’re using at the moment.” – Instagram

Aside from the updates, here’s a fun fact: Instagram was made in 8 weeks! Enjoy this great infographic timeline below by Anna Vital.

Featured CoPromoter: Entrepreneur Greg E. Hill

Classic Headshot

Greg E. Hill is a blogger, author, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, podcaster, and CoPromoter all in one! The North Carolina native is also a proud Graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, where he pledged the Beta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. He has worked for 3 fortune 500 companies and hosts “The Minority Trailblazer” podcast (which has been featured in the New & Noteworthy Section of iTunes and listened to in over 15 different countries). Find out how this man manages to do it all, while making time to promote all of his work along the way below:

1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your blog/podcast? What inspired you to start it?

My name is Greg E. Hill and I am a 26 year old blogger, author, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and podcaster. It all started when I was 15 years old. My mother used to give me $10 a week for lunch money. After a few weeks of starving (I would spend all of my money in 2 days) I used my money to buy a 24 pack of Gatorade. I sold them in my gym class. It eventually led to me operating a team of over 10 individuals selling 200+ sodas (higher profit margin) per day. I was making $100 a day at 15 years old and I haven’t looked back since.

I started my blog because I knew, as a speaker, I had to have an online presence. I also wanted to work on my writing, and what better way than to blog. My life changed when I realized I could write and speak how I talk to my peers and friends. So, although I am every English teacher’s worst nightmare, luckily I have been able to steadily build my own niche and now I am having guest bloggers and other people who share genuine, authentic, and unique stories write for my blog as well.

I launched my podcast because I noticed there were so few people of color in this space and I knew so many minorities that were doing AMAZING things. So, I found blueprints online from the greats (John Lee Dumas & Patt Flynn) and implemented their formula with a dash of my own creativity, voice, and network. And now we are up and rolling because I saw an opportunity, and immediately took action with the resources I had around me.

By no means am I big time. I will say that consistency, planning, and authenticity has allowed me to receive 4-6,000 unique visitors a month, over 8,000 podcast downloads, and a packed schedule of events due to leveraging my passion and the unique tools available online like CoPromote.

2) How do you choose what/who to feature and what to discuss on your blog/podcast?

For the Minority Trailblazer Podcast’s first season I used my current network of people I know from college, fraternity, or leadership development programs I was in. I also choose people who are authentic and own the story. I do not believe in fluff interviews I want to know your failures and know stories that everyone can relate to. If I am not motivated by the individual I won’t have them on my show. The key to getting some big time influencers to accept my invitation to be interviewed was my clarity on the vision & structure of the show. That’s why I was able to land high profile guests and get them to open up.

3) How do you promote your work as a blogger?

  1. I Utilize CoPromote

It’s only right that I say once I started using CoPromote I was exposed to a new community of creatives that have shared my content and my reach has expanded beyond my wildest dreams.

  1. Utilize Facebook Marketing

This has, by far, been my biggest key. My tipping point was getting to 1,000 likes on my page. Once I got there I would experiment with $2 a day sending adds to my current fan base and now if you look on my page I get an insane amount of engagement with little money. With a $100 budget I create just as much Facebook traction as people with hundreds and thousands of  followers.

Free Tip: Make sure your images fit the social media descriptions. People only engage with stuff that looks legit and I see so many small or oversized images on Facebook and Twitter, which won’t create traction. So please study the dimensions needed for your pictures on each platform.

  1. Utilize LinkedIn

Bloggers often overlook and underutilize LinkedIn. Share it with your connections if it is relevant.

  1. I write in my own voice

This is the key to blogging and promotion. You write in your own voice, have good but NOT misleading headline, traffic will come.

4) What advice would you give to people who want to start a blog/podcast?

I get that question all of the time from students, entrepreneurs, and dreamers. My answer never changes. I tell them they must do 3 things:

  1. Purchase a domain & get a professional WORDPRESS (responsive) theme from
  2. Know the Benchmarks in your industry. Look at how they moved, what conferences they attend, what books they’re reading, what products they’re selling, and choose what you can mimic and add flavor to. You have to immerse yourself within your craft.
  3. Start Today: The world is full of ideas and consumers. The ones that stand out are the ones who create content and don’t stop. It may take 1,2,5,or 10 years…it may take your whole life to gain traction but if you are consistent and authentic you will find your lane. And if not, who cares. This is something you said you love to do.

5) Have you found any other bloggers/authors/speakers through CoPromote whose work you currently follow?

David Brier is an entrepreneur I have found via CoPromote. I think this is a tool more speakers and podcasters should use so hopefully I can get more speakers into this community.

Post your work! Don’t be shy about it. Tumblr offers many options for content types: Text, Photo, Quote, Link, Chat, Audio and Video.

Tumblr Dashboard

  • Choose the content type that is best for each post. Sometimes an article is required, sometimes a photo will do, others a video or sound file is best. Switch it up!
  • Create a voice for your brand. Who are you speaking to? Who does your work generally attract? Develop a tone, use keywords consistently, provide a unique perspective, establish your own catch phrases.
  • Posting regularly creates a sense of expectation or fear of missing out, which keeps visitors coming back.

3) Reblog Others

Reblogging content is the quickest way to engage with other users and have them engage with you in return.

  • All it takes is a click of the reblog button in the bottom righthand corner of each post on your feed.
  • If you are not following the user whose content you wish to reblog, you can just click on the post and the reblog button should be in the top righthand corner of the page.

4) Comment and Reply

Another way to engage with fellow Tumblr creators is through commenting. Your comment could be as simple as an emoji or a paragraph about strikes you most about someone’s post. Replying to comments that people leave on your posts keeps your interaction with your audience moving.

  • Tags should be any keywords that pertain to the post.
  • Using tags makes it easier for other Tumblr users to find your content and share it as well!
  • Tumblr results and tags also come up on Google search.

6) Ask Anything

Ask Anything is a service people use to ask private or public questions directly. How you choose to answer is up to you. Choose one that best works for you. Recently, Tumblr has started hosting “Asks” by known public figures, similar to how Reddit hosts AMAs (Ask Me Anything).

Screen Shot 2016-02-25 at 2.06.16 PM

Responding privately

  • The “ask” will show up in the user’s inbox.
  • This is useful in cases where the question is sensitive in nature, or so specific as to not be valuable to the general Tumblr audience.

Responding publicly

  • Your response will show up on your Tumblr page as a post.
  • A perk to asking and responding publicly is that your followers and potential followers will see that you do engage with the people on your page and will be more apt to reach out to you via Ask Anything as well!
