Headliner Tops 20 Million Fans!

Every day more bands are signing up for Headliner and using it to promote themselves. On February 24th Headliner.fm’s reach hit 10,000,000 fans. Now, a month later, the site reaches 20,000,000. We are thrilled that the reception to our site has been so positive and are working hard to improve it. A bunch of awesome new features are on the way including detailed analytics that will allow users to make more informed promotion choices.

State Sponsored Music

Americans are used to the government paying for certain things: education, public roads, the military. But music and art?  Not so much. There is no accounting for taste and public funding for the arts has long caused controversy in the United States. Which artists are really artists? Who out of the hordes of U.S. musicians deserve to have their works subsidized by Uncle Sam? Photographer Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ caused an uproar among conservatives for winning a grant partially funded by the National Council for the Arts. Sponsoring rock and hiphop could no doubt lead to a similar furor. But elsewhere the situation is somewhat different. Scandinavian acts like “The Knife” have receive gubmint checks for releasing their albums. Pitchfork.com has an interesting analysis of public funding for music here.

The Best Ways to Use Headliner

Headliner is growing rapidly. We have a lot of users who are new to the system. To help everybody along I thought I would create a post on the best ways to use Headliner.

The Basics: Regardless of  the promotion you are running it is important to send it several days before you want it to run. That way bands will have several days to see your message and respond to it, before it expires. Also , smaller bands are more likely to accept messages than larger bands and we have found that the fans of smaller bands are more likely to click on links embedded in your promotion message.

Promote your show: A few days before your next show create a promotion message about it and schedule the message to go out on the day of the show.

  • Example:  “Hey check out (Your Band’s Name) show tonight at the Bowery Ball Room Snag a Ticket here: ( link to where people can get tickets)”
  • Look for bands whose music is similar to yours, their fans are likely to enjoy your band.
  • Remember to use Headliner’s URL shortener so we can track the campaign for you.

Get new fans: create a promotion message and ask to people to follow, or friend, your band.

  • Example: “Check out ( Your Band’s Name) follow them or become a fan to check out what they are up to.
  • Post a link to your Myspace or twitter account.
  • Remember to use Headliner’s URL shortener so we can track the campaign for you.
  • Look for bands whose music is similar to yours, their fans are likely to enjoy your band.

Sell your music: create a promotion message and point people to where they can buy your music online.

  • Example: “Check out the new song by ( Your Band’s Name )”
  • Post a link to where people can buy your music.
  • Remember to use Headliner’s URL shortener so we can track the campaign for you.
  • Look for bands whose music is similar to yours, their fans are likely to enjoy your band.

Sell your merch: create a promotion message about your merch.

  • Example: “Check out this new cool tee from( Your Band’s Name)”
  • Post a link to where people can buy your merch.
  • Remember to use Headliner’s URL shortener so we can track the campaign for you.
  • Look for bands whose music is similar to yours, their fans are likely to enjoy your band.

Create a contest: create a promotion message around a contest  for your band.

  • Example: “Sign up for (Your Band’s name)’s email list for a chance to win tickets to their next show.”
  • Post a link to where people sign up for your contest in exchange for signing up for something.
  • Remember to use Headliner’s URL shortener so we can track the campaign for you.
  • Look for bands whose music is similar to yours, their fans are likely to enjoy your band.

Weird Instruments: Croatian Sea Organ

Its spring in New York. The weather is getting nicer, the birds are chirping and tourists are returning. It is a great time to just chill outdoors. New York spring is cool, but the city could learn from Croatian spring. Thats because Croatia has one thing New York doesn’t: a wacky outdoor organ powered by the sea. If New York had one all the cool kids would be there. Check out this article on Gigwise about the world’s weirdest musical instruments including the Croatian Sea organ.
