Having a song blow up on the social web can generate lots of attention for previously unknown artists. Sometimes having a catchy song or stylized video is enough to get fans tweeting about a track, and sometimes it isn’t. For bands who want to make sure their new single gets talked about, trading free downloads in exchange for fans posting tweets about the music is proving a viable solution. In January Pearl Jam offered a free track to anyone who would tweet about it. Bands like Get Busy Committee and 30 Seconds to Mars have also had success with similar campaigns, 30 Seconds to Mars generated over 25,000 tweets when they offered one of their singles for download in exchange.
