Midem’s yearly conference on the state of music industry is going on in Cannes right now. Nothing is more relevant to the music business’ planning than the habits of consumers, and to get a better idea of those habits, Midem conducted a survey tabulating results from 8500 music fans in 13 countries. Amongst the findings 30% of consumers claimed to have bought a CD in the last month, while 19% bought merch in the past year. Only 29% of those surveyed would own up to having downloaded illegally. The high rate of CD purchase and low rate of illegal downloading reported leads me to believe that self reporting has skewed the results. People are apt to misrepresent themselves when they aren’t forced to verify, but that’s just the opinion of one super intelligent, fabulously wealthy, professional basketball player. Anyway check out the results here.
