Music Industry Reacts to Haitian Disaster

Way before LiveAid and “Do they Know it’s Christmas?” musicians have leveraged their celebrity to further social causes. In the wake of the havoc caused by the Haitian earthquake, socially conscious musicians are stepping out of the studio and into the public sphere to raise money for relief efforts. Montreal based punk rockers Fucked Up are auctioning early pressings of their upcoming singles’ collection Couple Tracks with proceeds going to Doctors without Borders.  Former fugee and Haitian émigré, Wyclef Jean is scheduled to MC a telethon on MTV to raise money for Haiti and his own charity Yele. (It may be important to note that several watchdog groups, including the Smoking Gun, have raised questions about Yele’s accounting practices). Readers interested in donating to the Haitian relief effort can give $10 to the Red Cross by texting “Haiti” to 90999 or go to the websites of Doctors Without Borders or Partners in Health to donate for medical care.
