The Next Soundscan

Digital sales are scheduled to eclipse physical sales in revenue this year, but the most common way to gauge the success of an album is still based entirely on physical sales. Soundscan was introduced in 1991 as a method to track the retail sales of an album; almost 20 years later the landscape of music sales has changed drastically, but the method to track sales remains unchanged.
