New online services like Spotify and Vimeo aim to curb illegal downloading by encouraging music lovers to stream music and videos legally. But why would anyone stream music when they can own it? A new British survey regarding the habits of music consumers in the UK seems to suggest “they wouldn’t.” When asked about their plans for downloading in the future, the majority of illegal downloaders answered that they planned to download more, rather than less, in the face of Spotify’s highly publicized UK debut. An Ad-supported, legal, downloading site seems to be years in the future, but clearly the true market value of digital music is much lower than major labels would like us to believe.
